Lawsuits for seemingly misleading marketing and product claims are very common. In the latest such developments, Canon seems to have come under fire. The company sells a variety of all-in-one printer models that can also be used as scanners and even faxes. However, it is clear that when the printer cartridge is out of ink or out of ink, there are many such models that disable scanning and other additional functions. This question is not new, because there are old threads dating back to 2016, and people have complained about it. (Thread 1, 2)

Therefore, it may be the annoyed customer David Leacraft who decided to sue Canon USA in this matter because he felt that the product he had purchased was misguided. According to the lawsuit, Leacraft purchased a PIXMA MG2522 model that can print, copy and scan.

Canon does not represent or warn consumers that ink is a necessary component for scanning or faxing documents.

[..] Canon knows or should have known that its statements and advertisements about all-in-one printers are false and misleading

The lawsuit went on to claim that Canon did so only to make more money from this ink sale, which is necessary to keep the device functioning as a scanner or fax machine.

Manufacturing an all-in-one printer with ink level detection function will cause the scanner to stop working when the ink level is low or run out, without any reason or technical basis. The all-in-one printer designed by Canon requires consumers to keep ink in their devices [...] The result is an increase in ink sales, and Canon has made considerable profits from it.
